Is there a rule on nba basketball free throws? Every basketball game i have ever watched ha s had someone fouled and when they shoot the free throw they never try to hit it off the back board...do you have to shoot for a swish? can you hit it off the backboard?

You can shoot it any way you want, but if you miss, you must at least hit the rim. The reason no one banks the free-throw, is that it is a harder shot to make straight on, than just going for the swish. Bank shots are usually the easiest from either sides of the basket.

you have to hit the rim if you are intentionally trying to miss it.
you can shoot a bank shot but its just frowned apond so no one does it.
